Walking the States

More guided walks run in American cities than anywhere else we cover.

Red brick underfoot in Boston, praline and gumbo through the French Quarter, three separate ghost stories in Savannah before ten at night. Three kinds of American walk and what it costs to join each one.

Great walking cities

Six cities that reward a guide more than a map.

Closes off a medieval high street, a hill town stacked on itself, an old town nobody bombed, a quarter built for the dead. Each one has a walk that explains the rest of the week.

Before you book

What a guided walk asks of you: hours, cobbles and a decent pair of shoes.

Most walks here run two to three hours and cover two to four miles at a talking pace, with stops. Stairs and cobblestones stop more people than distance does, and step-free routes are worth asking about by name. Twelve people can hear a guide without a headset. Thirty cannot. Tip-based walks are free to join and are not free to finish.

After dark

The same streets, a lantern, and somebody who knows which house it happened in.

Ghost walks are the one format that improves in the rain. Edinburgh closes and the vaults under South Bridge, French Quarter tombs, Prague once the day groups have gone, Rome by torchlight.

Old towns

An old town is a floor plan. The guide is the legend.

Medieval street grids, walls that decided where the gates went, a Jewish quarter with one surviving synagogue, the plaque nobody stops at. These are the walks that turn a pretty lane into a place with a reason for being there.

What it costs

What a guided walk actually costs.

Every walk on the site sorted by price. The gap between a tip-based introduction and a private guide is far wider than the gap between two cities.

Under $25

Tip-based introductions, reservation-fee free walks and the two-hour city highlights.

$25 to $75

The standard shape: three hours, a small group, and most of the food and ghost walks.

$75 and up

Private guides, all-day routes and the food walks that are really a long lunch.

Most walked

The walks more travellers take than any others.

Worth the detour

Three walks you cannot do anywhere else.

Any city can run a highlights loop. A sealed chamber under a bridge, a cemetery you are not allowed into alone and a red line painted across a whole downtown are one-of-one.

Under South Bridge

The Edinburgh Vaults

South Bridge was finished in 1788 with nineteen arches, and all but one of them was built over. The chambers inside were let as workshops and storage, flooded badly, and were sealed and forgotten for the best part of two centuries before being dug out again in the 1980s. There is no daylight down there and no phone signal, which does most of the work for the guides.

The French Quarter

St Louis Cemetery No. 1

The water table sits so high in New Orleans that the dead were housed above ground, in family tombs reused across generations. The oldest cemetery of them all has been closed to unaccompanied visitors since 2015 after years of vandalism, so a licensed guide is not an upsell here, it is the only way through the gate.

Sixteen stops, one line

The Freedom Trail

Someone painted a red line along two and a half miles of Boston pavement and it has been doing the navigating ever since, linking sixteen sites from the Common up to Bunker Hill. You can follow the brick alone for nothing. What a guide adds is the order the events actually happened in, which the route itself gets wrong.
